Encrypted controller FAQs

Discontinued Notice: The 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi/Ethernet accessory devices mentioned in this article have been discontinued. Upgrading to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory is recommended for users who wish to add connectivity to their generator or users experiencing ongoing connectivity issues. It is compatible with more generators and uses multiple carrier networks to offer greater coverage. Basic (free) and Premium cellular plans are available for users of this device. See here to upgrade: Connectivity Cellular Accessory.

Frequently asked questions

1. What does it mean for the controller to be encrypted?
An encrypted controller secures all communication through the controller’s data ports to ensure that only approved parties can access generator information, enhancing security and privacy.

2. Will third-party (Omnimetrics, Power Telematics, etc.) devices still be compatible when the controller is encrypted?
No. Only Generac-approved accessories will be compatible with encrypted controllers.

3. How do I know which controllers are encrypted?
The generator’s data tag will include a Black or Green dot to indicate that it was shipped with an encrypted controller.

4. Can Evo 2 controllers currently in the field be encrypted with no adverse effects?
Yes. The encryption will occur during the next firmware update. Third-party monitoring will no longer work afterward, but otherwise there should be no negative effects.

5. What is the process for updating the firmware?
Firmware can be updated via USB (by an authorized dealer) or automatically over Wi-Fi/LTE.

6. How long does it take to update the new firmware with encryption?
USB updates can take up to 20 minutes. Wi-Fi and LTE updates occur automatically in the background.

7. What happens if I do not update to the new firmware with encryption?
Failure to update may prevent your generator from receiving critical updates and could affect warranty validity.

8. Is there a way to allow certain devices to bypass encryption?
Only Generac-approved devices and parties can bypass encryption.

9. Can I roll back a controller that has encryption to a firmware that did not have encryption?
No. Rollback is not possible on encrypted units marked with a black or green dot.

10. Do I need specific accessory firmware for encrypted controllers?
Yes. Devices must have specific firmware versions to ensure compatibility with encrypted controllers.

11. Is there a specific Wi-Fi module that must be used for encrypted controllers?
Yes. A specific GainSpan Wi-Fi module will be required. Tether Wi-Fi modules are not supported.

12. Will LTE and Wi-Fi/Ethernet accessories work with encrypted controllers?
Yes, with the appropriate firmware update installed on the accessory.

13. Why have the generator controllers been encrypted?
To protect data and prevent accidental or malicious changes that could damage the generator or void warranties.

14. Will both air-cooled and liquid-cooled generators be encrypted?
Currently, only air-cooled Evolution 2.0 and Sync 3.0 controllers are being encrypted.

15. Will a generator need to be encrypted to receive future firmware upgrades?
No, but all future firmware updates will include encryption, making encryption unavoidable in time.

16. Will the local wireless module work with encrypted generators?
No. The “Three Light” Wireless Monitor accessory (6669) has been discontinued and is not compatible.

17. Can older generators that aren’t currently encrypted still receive firmware updates?
Yes, if the model is still eligible for updates. These updates will include encryption.
