Several factors contribute to calculating the fuel expenses associated with operating a home standby generator, including:
- Load size and duration
- Size of the generator
- Ambient temperature
- Elevation at the geographical location of the generator
- Fuel type & price
- Pipe size
- BTUs required by the generator

The generator's specification sheet or installation manual contains information regarding the fuel consumption rating for each fuel type in BTUs.
