Troubleshooting the electric start on the 3500iQ

This article outlines a straightforward troubleshooting guide to help resolve common problems with the electric start system on the Generac 3500iQ portable generator.

Environment 

This article applies to Generac 3500iQ portable generator. 
 

Procedure 

Step 1: Check the battery cable connections. 

Description:

The battery cables in the 3500iQ are shipped disconnected to ensure safety and preserve the battery's charge. Improperly connected or loose battery cables can prevent the electric start from functioning correctly. 

Action: 

1. Use a Phillips/cross screwdriver to remove the screw from the battery door. 

2. Remove battery strap (1) from battery (2).

3. First, connect the red cables to the positive (+) battery terminal with the bolt and nut supplied.

4. Make sure connections are secure and slide rubber boot over the positive (+) battery terminal and connection hardware. 

5. Connect the black cables to the negative (-) battery terminal with the bolt and nut supplied. Slide rubber boot over the negative (-) battery terminal and connection hardware. 

6. Make sure all connections are secure. 

 

Step 2: Verify the startup procedure.

Description:

Incorrect startup procedures can hinder the functionality of your generator's electric start. It's crucial to follow the specific steps outlined in the owner's manual. 


Action:

Startup procedure for electric start operation.

1. Unplug all electrical loads from the unit's receptacles before starting the engine. 

2. Place generator on level surface. 

3. Rotate the OFF/ON/CHOKE dial to CHOKE (1)

4. Switch Economy switch to OFF.

5. Push and hold OFF/ON electric start switch in the ON position. 
(A) Release switch when engine starts.

6. When engine starts, rotate OFF/ON/CHOKE dial to ON (2). Choke operation is reduced as OFF/ON/CHOKE dial is rotated towards ON

Note: If engine fires, but does not continue to run, rotate the OFF/ON/CHOKE dial to OFF and repeat starting instructions. 

Step 3. Ensure the battery is charged.

Description:

A common issue with electric starts is a drained battery. The generator's battery may lose charge over time, especially if it has been stored without use. 

Note: The generator requires a 12V charge to start.


Action:

To charge the battery, use the appropriate 12V charger or manually start the generator and let run until charged.
