Home Standby Transfer Switch Compatibility

A manual transfer switch does not possess the necessary control wiring required to work with an automatic home standby generator. It's important to note that home standby units are designed to be used exclusively with an Automatic Transfer Switch and are equipped with the appropriate control wiring to ensure compatibility. Generac does not provide guidance on how to wire a manual transfer switch to a Home Standby Unit, as it is not intended to be used in such a manner and could compromise the generator warranty. For any wiring-related inquiries beyond the scope of the installation manual, it is advisable to consult with an independent authorized service dealer.
 

Manual Transfer Switches

A Manual Transfer Switch (MTS) enables the connection of a portable generator directly to circuits through a power inlet box, eliminating the need for electrical cords to be routed throughout the house. The initiation and operation of the transfer process are performed manually, typically by pressing a button or manipulating a handle, and the process takes place locally.
 

Automatic Transfer Switches

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a device designed to seamlessly switch power sources, such as from utility power to generator power, in the event of a primary power source failure. It serves as a fail-safe measure and a safety precaution, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to multiple devices or loads. Home Standby Units are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with an Automatic Transfer Switch.
