Do I need a different battery tray when using the AGM 30L battery?

Environment

This article applies to Next Generation Series air-cooled home standby generators using either a AGM BTX20L battery or the newer AGM 30L battery.

Overview

• Generac is conducting a rolling transition from the previously used AGM BTX20L battery to a larger AGM 30L battery on Next Generation Series air-cooled home standby generators
• This change is intended to provide extended battery duration and increased starting capacity in outage scenarios and cold-start conditions
• During this transition, battery and hardware requirements may vary depending on how and when the generator was built or installed
• In early May 2026, the AGM 30L battery will become standard on new Next Generation Series air-cooled home standby generators

Previous battery recommendation: AGM Powersport Battery, Group BTX20L, 310CCA  (part A0002359535) 

Updated battery recommendation: AGM PowerSports Battery, Group Size 30L, 400 CCA (part A0010137452 or A0010137451)

Battery tray kit (required for installation of the AGM 30L): Part number G00735230

When a battery tray is required

A battery tray designed to accommodate the 30L battery is required if a AGM 30L battery is being installed on Next Generation air-cooled generators that were originally configured for a AGM BTX20L battery.

Note: The larger AGM 30L battery will not fit correctly in the original tray designed for the smaller AGM BTX20L battery. The battery tray must be installed to accommodate the larger battery. See here for battery tray installation instructions.

When a battery tray is not required

• New production generators that ship with a AGM 30L battery factory-installed do not require a separate or additional battery tray.
• Generators continuing to use a AGM BTX20L battery do not require any tray changes.

About the transition

• The AGM BTX20L battery remains supported during the transition period.
• The AGM 30L  battery will become standard on new Next Generation air-cooled generators as production transitions.
• This change is intended to provide extended battery duration in situations where utility power is not present.
