Does a home standby generator qualify for the energy tax credit?

Generac generators do not qualify for an energy tax credit. However, Generac PWRcell systems may qualify for a federal energy tax credit.

PWRcell tax credit

Generac PWRcell products meet the definition of a “qualified battery storage system” and are eligible for the residential energy efficient property credit in that:

1. They are designed and manufactured to be installed in connection with a dwelling or residence; and
2. they have a capacity of not less than 3 kilowatt hours.

Generac does not assume responsibility beyond providing proof of eligibility.

Note: This tax credit is only available through Dec. 31, 2025. 

QMID number requests (Qualified Manufacturer Identification number)

Some customers ask for a QMID number (Qualified Manufacturer Identification number) when preparing their tax filing paperwork. The QMID is an IRS-issued identifier associated with certain products that may qualify for the IRS Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Internal Revenue Code Section 25C) and related reporting requirements.

Generac does not provide a QMID number for home standby generators because these products do not qualify for the federal energy tax credit. Since the QMID is intended for qualifying energy-efficient home improvement property under IRS rules, a QMID is not applicable to Generac home standby generators.
