Draining fuel from a pressure washer

To prevent the fuel from expiring and causing starting issues in the future, it is recommended to drain all fuel from the tank of a pressure washer before storing it for more than 30 days.

 

Draining vs. fuel treatment

Please note that you can alternatively treat the fuel with a stabilizer. If a fuel stabilizer is added to the fuel system, prepare and run the engine according to the start-up procedure in the owner's manual. Adequately prepared fuel can be stored for up to 24 months. 

Environment

This article applies to pressure washers. This procedure is commonly followed when preparing a pressure washer for storage.

To Drain the Remaining Fuel From a Pressure Washer: 

1. Bring the unit into a well-ventilated area.
2. Open the gas tank cap.
3. Locate the fuel valve just below the air filter housing and turn it to the off position.

4. Using a siphon approved for use with gasoline, siphon as much fuel as possible into an approved container next to the unit, being careful not to overfill the container.
5. If needed, tilt the unit slightly so that all of the fuel goes to the end of the unit to allow as much fuel to be siphoned as possible.
6. Next locate the carburetor under the air filter housing. Slide a container under the carburetor.

7. With the container in place, remove the carburetor’s drain bolt using a wrench or appropriate socket and ratchet. It will be the bolt that is positioned at an angle on the carburetor’s bowl, NOT the bolt at the very bottom of the bowl.
8. Allow any remaining gas to drain into the container. Replace the drain plug when complete.
9. Follow your pressure washer's startup procedure to start the unit and deplete any remaining fuel. See this article for general instructions to start a pressure washer. Make sure there is always water running through the pressure washer when the engine is running.
