How do I open an air-cooled home standby generator lid?

This article explains how to unlock and open the lid on Generac air-cooled home standby generators. For Next Generation Series units, the lid uses a single center lock behind the front bezel; press down on the lid above the lock and turn the key left to unlock. For Guardian Series (2017–present), there are two side locks; press down above each side lock before turning the key, then repeat on the other side to open the lid. The universal replacement key part number is 0G66240KEY, available from customer support, Ordertree, or a dealer—useful if the lid seems stuck or the key is lost.

Next Generation Series generators

1. Use keys (included) to unlock the generator lid.

Note: If you have misplaced the keys, the universal part number is 0G66240KEY. A replacement set can be requested for free by calling Generac customer support at 888-436-3722. Alternatively, they can be purchased on Ordertree, or from a Generac dealer.

2. One lock (A) secures the generator lid. The lock is located behind the bezel in the center of the front access panel. Insert the key vertically. Press down on the on the lid above the lock and turn to the left to unlock.

4. Remove the key from the lock and secure in a safe place.

Note: Always verify lock is unlocked before attempting to lift the lid.

Guardian Series generators

1. Use keys (included) to unlock the generator lid.

2. Two locks (A) secure the lid; one on each side of the enclosure. Open the protective rubber cap to access the keyhole and unlock the lid.

3. Press down on the lid above the side lock, and unlock latch to correctly open lid.

4. Repeat for the other side. The lid may appear stuck if pressure is not applied from the top. 

Note: Always verify side locks are unlocked before attempting to lift the lid.
