How do I prepare my portable generator for a storm?

Storms and outage scenarios can create unsafe operating conditions, limited access to supplies, and longer run times. Preparation before the storm

Keep critical information available offline

1. Download a copy of your portable generator’s owner’s manual. Internet and cellular service are not guaranteed during a severe outage. Save a local copy of your manual so it can be accessed offline. See: Where can I download a user manual for my Generac portable generator?

Confirm the generator is ready to start

2. Check and charge the battery (if applicable). If your generator has electric start or EFI, a charged battery is often required for reliable starting and operation. Battery charging guidance varies by model. See your owner’s manual and these related resources:

3. Perform a test run. Run the generator briefly in a safe outdoor location to confirm it starts smoothly and runs normally. Listen for unusual noises or vibration and address issues before the storm arrives. If troubleshooting is needed, see: Portable generator troubleshooting guide

Inspect and perform required maintenance

4. Inspect the generator and complete any maintenance that is due. Pay special attention to items that can prevent starting or cause shutdowns during extended operation.

• Check engine oil level and condition, and change oil if required by your maintenance schedule.
• Inspect the air filter and replace it if dirty or damaged.
• Inspect the spark plug and replace it if worn or fouled.
• Look for loose hardware, damaged wiring, fuel leaks, or broken covers.

Prepare fuel and supplies ahead of time

5. Plan your fuel supply. Have an adequate supply of fresh fuel stored safely before the storm arrives.

• Use approved fuel containers to reduce the risk of leaks and moisture contamination.
• Consider using a fuel stabilizer for stored fuel, especially if fuel may sit for an extended period.

Plan a safe operating location (before weather worsens)

6. Identify a safe outdoor location before the storm arrives. Do not wait until conditions are severe to decide where the generator will run.

• Select an open outdoor area that is far away from windows, doors, vents, and other openings into the home.
• Aim the exhaust away from occupied buildings.
• Plan for safe ventilation and clearance around the generator, and keep children and pets away.
• We do not recommend running our portable generators in inclement weather including rain, sleet, or snow.
• Well-ventilated car ports which are open on all sides and allow for at least five (5) feet of clearance on all sides of the generator are an acceptable option for protecting the generator from the elements while running. 

Note: Never run a generator indoors or in partly enclosed areas such as garages. Carbon monoxide (CO) can be fatal.

Inspect cords and plan how you will power devices
