Running a home standby generator in manual mode

A homeowner may want to run their generator in manual mode for testing purposes or to extend the exercise duration manually. If the generator is not activated, it will only operate in Manual mode. Note that manual mode does not switch power over to the generator unless there is a utility outage. Environment

This article applies to:
  • Generac Next Generation Series 10-28 kW air-cooled standby generators
  • Generac Guardian Series 10-26 kW air-cooled standby generators (2017 to present)

To run a generator in manual mode: 

  1. Go to the generator and press the OFF button once.
  2. Turn off the Main Line Circuit Breaker (MLCB) on the generator.
  3. Press the MANUAL button once. This will start the generator.
  4. Allow the generator to run as needed for testing or exercise purposes. Keep in mind maintenance intervals and oil change requirements, as running a generator in manual mode adds to the total generator run hours.
    Note: Running the generator manually is one method to test or exercise the generator. While the Guardian series units do not have an adjustable exercise timer, Next Gen models do have an adjustable exercise timer: Can I Change the Exercise Cycle Duration?
  5. Press the OFF button once again.
  6. Press the AUTO button once to return the generator to automatic mode.
  7. Turn on the Main Line Circuit Breaker (MLCB) on the generator.
  8. If your generator is monitored by Mobile Link, the status should update in the app, though it may take some time for the change to reflect.
