This article applies to Generac portable generators that use a removable lead-acid starter battery.

Before replacing the battery

Battery replacement procedures vary by generator model and size. Before beginning, review the Battery Replacement section of the generator owner’s manual. If the manual is unavailable, see Where can I download a user manual for my Generac portable generator?

Note: The following steps provide general guidance and may not apply exactly to every model. Follow all model-specific instructions, cautions, and warnings in the owner’s manual.

Replacing the battery

Note: Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first. Because the negative terminal is connected to the generator’s ground, removing it first reduces the risk of a short circuit if a metal tool accidentally contacts the positive terminal and another metal part of the generator.
