Troubleshooting the electric start on the iQ3500

This article outlines troubleshooting steps to help resolve common problems with the electric start system on the Generac iQ3500 portable generator.

Environment

This article applies to the Generac iQ3500 portable generator.

Procedure

Step 1: Check the battery cable connections

Description:

The battery cables in the iQ3500 are shipped disconnected to help ensure safety and preserve the battery charge. Loose or incorrectly connected battery cables can prevent the electric start from operating.

Action:

1. Use a Phillips or cross-head screwdriver to remove the screw from the battery door.
2. Remove the battery strap (1) from the battery (2).

3. Connect the red cables to the positive (+) battery terminal using the supplied bolt and nut.
4. Make sure the connections are secure, and then slide the rubber boot over the positive (+) battery terminal and connection hardware.
5. Connect the black cables to the negative (-) battery terminal using the supplied bolt and nut. Slide the rubber boot over the negative (-) battery terminal and connection hardware.
6. Make sure all connections are secure.

Step 2: Verify the startup procedure

Description:

An incorrect startup procedure can prevent the electric start from operating as expected. Follow the startup steps outlined in the owner's manual.

Action:

Complete the following steps to start the generator using the electric start:

1. Unplug all electrical loads from the generator's receptacles before starting the engine.
2. Place the generator on a level surface.
3. Rotate the OFF/ON/CHOKE dial to CHOKE (1).

4. Move the Economy switch to OFF.
5. Push and hold the OFF/ON electric start switch in the ON position. Release the switch when the engine starts (A).

6. When the engine starts, rotate the OFF/ON/CHOKE dial toward ON (2). Choke operation is reduced as the dial is rotated toward ON.

Note: If the engine fires but does not continue running, rotate the OFF/ON/CHOKE dial to OFF and repeat the starting instructions.

Step 3: Make sure the battery is charged

Description:

A discharged battery is a common cause of electric start problems. The generator's battery may lose its charge over time, particularly when the generator has been stored or has not been operated regularly.

Note: The generator requires a charged 12-volt battery for electric start operation.

Action:

Charge the battery using an appropriate 12-volt battery charger.

Charging:

• Both the iQ3800 and the iQ5200 charge the battery while running
• A battery charger is not included.
• Alternatively, the generator's battery can be charged using an external battery charger or battery tender.

What type of charger is recommended?

• Generac recommends a battery tender for charging. 
• Battery tenders are available at most battery stores and big box retailers for under $15 USD. 
• For charging guidelines and recommendations, refer to the battery tender's manufacturer guidelines. 
• If using an after-market battery charger or battery tender, the battery should be disconnected from the generator while charging.
