This sudden stoppage of flow causes pressure waves to propagate through the system, potentially causing damage to the pump and other components. Additionally, pressurized chemicals or water trapped inside the pump can quickly boil and cause damage to the pump housing.

To prevent water hammer:
 
  • Do not allow vehicles to drive over the discharge hose.​
  • Do not abruptly compress the discharge hose.​
  • Do not shut off the discharge flow while the engine is running.​
  • Damage caused to the pump by water hammer is not warranted.
