Idle control vs. economy (eco) mode 

Some Generac portable generators include idle control or economy (eco) mode. These features are often confused because they both adjust engine speed, but they serve different purposes and apply to different generator types.

Environment

This article applies to portable generators with idle control or eco mode.

Idle control 

Found on: Typically larger, open-frame generators such as contractor-grade or high-output units.

Function: Reduces engine speed automatically when there is no electrical load.

Purpose: Helps minimize fuel consumption, engine wear, and noise during low-load or no-load conditions.

Operation: The generator immediately returns to full operating speed as soon as a load is applied, making it ideal for tools and equipment with variable power demands. 

 Economy mode (eco mode)

Found on: Primarily inverter generators, which are generally smaller and quieter.

Function: Adjusts engine speed automatically based on actual power demand.

Purpose: Improves overall fuel efficiency and reduces noise continuously, not only when unloaded.

Operation: Engine speed changes proportionally to load levels, providing smoother and more efficient operation.

 Key difference

Idle control works as a simple on/off speed reduction during no-load conditions, while economy mode continuously varies engine speed according to load demand for higher efficiency and quieter operation.
