Fuel readings in Mobile Link do not match tank gauge

When fuel readings in Mobile Link do not match what the tank shows on the gauge, there are a variety of possible causes. Below are several possible causes and actions to take to correct the issue. LTE LP Fuel Level Monitors can indicate a +/- 4% to 6 % variance from what you see within Mobile Link in comparison to the dial.

Environment

This article applies to the LTE LP Fuel Level Monitor when used in the Mobile Link web or mobile application. The Wi-Fi version of the fuel monitor has been discontinued and is no longer supported in Mobile Link.

Verify last reading

Verify the Last Reading Date shown in Mobile Link.

• If the reading is more than 24 hours old, this indicates the device is not currently connected. Please verify the LTE signal strength in the area for LTE devices.
• If the reading is 24 hours or less, proceed to further troubleshooting.

Confirm configuration settings

• Confirm tank configuration settings are accurate to match the customer’s tank. This information is located under the Tank Details tab. If the tank details are incorrect, click the pencil icon to update/modify them as needed.

Verify the following settings:

• Tank orientation
• Tank size

Note: It is important that these are entered accurately as it can cause discrepancies or large differences for what you see within the account compared to the dial on the tank

Temperature fluctuation

Liquid propane levels can fluctuate based on outdoor temperatures. It is not uncommon to see fluctuations ranging from 5–10%.

• Propane volume rises and falls with temperature changes. Propane becomes denser as temperatures fall and expands as temperatures increase.
• Compared to water, propane expands much more rapidly—approximately 17 times the expansion rate of water over the same temperature increase.
• Example: A large temperature drop (over 20°F) may cause the gauge to indicate less propane in the tank. If the gauge dial shows between 35% and 40% after the temperature drop, the tank still contains 424 pounds of propane. While the propane volume has dropped, the actual amount of propane has not decreased.

Potential dial issues

• There may be issues or damage to the dial itself. (example the needle may be stuck)
• Verify that the cable for the Tank Utility is fully clipped into the dial. Try disconnecting and re-clipping the cable to ensure it is securely connected.
• Inspect for wear and damage to the sensor cable and sensor boot.  Internal (not visible) or external damage can cause the readings to be displayed as 0% within your Mobile Link account
  • This may also be noticed as an intermediate 0% as well but dial itself is ok
