Why Is My Generator Engine Making a Clattering or Ticking Noise?

Some generators with hydraulic valve lifters may exhibit a clattering or ticking noise upon initial startup. This is an expected behavior caused by hydraulic valve lash adjustors filling with pressurized oil. The noise should go away after running the unit for around five minutes.

Clattering or Ticking Noise on Generator Engine Startup

On some units, after long periods of storage OR at initial startup and commissioning, the engine may exhibit a lighter clattering or ticking type noise from the upper end of the engine. This is a normal characteristic of the hydraulic valve lash adjusters filling with pressurized oil.


Environment

This issue may be observed on initial startup on air-cooled home standby generators that feature hydraulic valve lifters. See the What Is a Hydraulic Lifter? article for more information.


Resolution

The noise should not persist, nor should it get louder after running for five minutes. If the noise becomes significantly louder, seems to be more of a heavy knocking noise, OR seems to be from the lower end of the engine, shut down the engine immediately and inspect oil quantity and quality.
