Why does Field Pro indicate “Firmware Update In Progress” when connecting to the generator?

Question

When attempting to connect to a generator in the Field Pro app, the app displays a message that a firmware update is in progress. Why does this appear and what should be done?

Answer

Generac updates Next Generation generator firmware over-the-air as needed. While a firmware update is in progress, Field Pro cannot connect to the generator. The app will show a status message under the unit’s serial number indicating the firmware update is in progress.

What you will see in Field Pro

In the Field Pro app, go to Login to Field Pro > Work on a Home Standby Generator > Connect to a Generator Now. If a firmware update is active, the generator’s serial number entry will include a message that the update is in progress.

What to do

1. Allow the firmware update to complete. Typical duration is about 5 to 10 minutes with a strong cellular signal. It may take longer with a weak signal.
2. While you wait, tap Search Again in Field Pro periodically to refresh the generator list.
3. When the update completes, the serial number will reappear without the yellow warning icon or the firmware update in progress message, and you can connect.

Note: If the firmware update remains in progress for more than 20 minutes, contact Generac Customer Support at 1-800-462-8352.

Cause

The generator is automatically downloading and installing the latest firmware via its built-in connectivity. During this time, the controller will not accept a Field Pro Bluetooth connection to help the update complete without interruption.
