Model ident, fix harness resistor message on Evolution controllers

This message can appear after replacing or installing an Evolution controller if the controller is powered up in the wrong sequence. It can also occur if the harness connectors are not fully seated, especially the 20-pin connector on the underside of the control panel.

Environment

This article applies to Generac home standby generators that have an Evolution controller (2017 and newer).

Resolution

  1. Perform a hard reset on the controller. See the How Do I Perform a Hard Reset on a Home Standby System? article for steps to perform this procedure.
  2. If the message returns after a hard reset, check the harness connections and verify they are properly seated.
    • Verify the 20-pin connector is fully seated on the underside of the control panel.
    • Unplug and firmly re-seat the harness connectors (do not force them). If any pins appear bent, damaged, or corroded, stop and contact an authorized service dealer.
  3. If the Evolution controller was recently replaced, the controller may need to be powered up with the harnesses connected in the correct sequence.
    • After completing the power-down steps in the hard reset procedure, ensure the smaller harness connector (the one that includes the identification resistor) is connected first.
    • Restore power, then connect the larger harness connector.
  4. If the controller was replaced and this message persists, verify the replacement controller is the correct model for the generator. If you are unsure, contact an authorized service dealer for assistance.
