Why isn't the electric start working on my iQ3800 or iQ5200 portable inverter generator?

If the electric start is not working on your new iQ3800 or iQ5200 portable inverter generator, the most likely reason is that the battery is not properly connected.

Environment

This article applies to iQ Dual Fuel Series portable inverter generators.

Battery connection process

Follow the steps below to connect the battery for the electric start feature on iQ Dual Fuel Series portable generators.

Note: The unit is shipped with the battery cable harness disconnected, and both ends are fitted with protective covers.

1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw from the battery door. (See Step 1 image below.)
2. Open the battery door and pull the battery cables from the compartment. Locate the protective covers. (See Step 2 image below.)
3. Remove protective cover from each connector and push the connectors together firmly. (See Step 3 image below.)
4. Confirm that all connections are secure and that the red rubber boot is covering the (+) battery terminal. (See Step 4 image below.)
5. Push the battery wires back into the battery compartment.
6. Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the screw and securely close the battery door.

Note: If the battery is unable to start the engine, charge it with an appropriate 12V charger, or manually start the generator and let it run until the battery is charged.

 

If you continue to experience issues with the electric start:

1. Unplug all electrical cords and devices from the unit's receptacles before starting the engine.

2. Place generator on a level surface.

3. Rotate the fuel selector knob to the desired fuel source (gasoline or LP) If using LP fuel source, connect LP tank and turn LP tank valve to the ON position. If using gasoline, verify the tank is full of clean, fresh unleaded gasoline with a minimum 87 octane rating.

4. Switch economy switch to OFF.

5. Ensure the main ON/OFF switch (A) is set to ON. See Figure 3.4 below.

6. Push engine START/STOP button (B) for one (1) second to wake the controls.

7. After waiting for a few seconds, push the engine STOP/STOP again and hold for three (3) seconds.

8. The engine will attempt to start, automatically adjusting the choke as needed.

Note: If engine fires, but does not continue to run, repeat the process again starting at step 6.

If you continue to experience issues with the electric start, verify that:

• The spark plug is not defective.
• The fuel filter is not plugged.
• The fuel selector knob is set to the desired fuel source.
• The engine oil level is correct.
• The carburetor is not flooded (if it is flooded, drain the carburetor).
• The throttle plate is not closed (to resolve, open the throttle plate by pushing toward the back of the unit).

If unable to resolve the issue with the electric start, consult the owner's manual or contact a Generac authorized service dealer near you.
