Secondary enclosures for home standby generators

Generac’s generators are not designed or intended to be enclosed in a secondary enclosure. Generac’s home standby generators include an all-weather housing with venting designed and tested to provide proper airflow and exhaust for the engine in open air. Moreover, enclosing a Generac generator in a secondary enclosure may prevent access to safety features (for example, the auxiliary shutoff switch) that are readily accessible on the exterior of Generac’s generators in accordance with current National Electric Code (NEC) requirements. Accordingly, enclosing a Generac generator in a secondary enclosure may render such generator installation non-code compliant under the NEC and/or local building codes. In addition, Generac generators are tested, certified, and listed in accordance with UL2200 and CSA C22.2 no. 100, with such testing, certification, and listing only applicable to Generac generators that are installed and used in accordance with Generac’s use and installation instructions.

Warranty considerations

Generac’s warranty does not extend to damage caused by unauthorized modifications of its generators or damage and/or failures caused by improper installation of a generator, which would include enclosing a generator in a secondary enclosure. Any damage to a generator caused by enclosing it in a secondary enclosure will not be covered by Generac.
