The I Can’t Find My Original Owner’s Manual for My Portable Generator, How Can I Get Another Copy? article provides instructions for locating a Generac portable generator user manual.

Most portable generators require an oil change within the first 30 hours, but some smaller generators will require it earlier.

Note: Change the oil more frequently when using portable generators in extreme, dirty, or dusty conditions or in extremely hot weather.

Step-by-step procedure

The steps below outline a general process. Always review your generator's user manual for specific steps that may be unique to your generator model. For example, portable units with an OHVI engine require an oil filter. Use the product lookup tool on Generac.com to find your generator's user manual.

1. Run the generator for a few minutes to allow the oil to heat up and become more viscous with the engine's heat.
2. Wait until the engine is cool enough to be touched.
3. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and place the wire where it cannot contact the spark plug.
4. Clean the area around the oil fill and oil drain plug.
5. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick.
6. Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil completely into a suitable container.
7. Install the oil drain plug and tighten it securely.
8. Refill the crankcase with oil to the Full line (H). Refrain from overfilling.
9. Install the oil fill cap/dipstick and hand-tighten.
10. Wipe up any spilled oil.
11. Properly dispose of oil following all applicable regulations.
