How-to: Adding oil to a Generac portable generator

Environment:

This article applies to most Generac portable generator engines.

1. Make sure the generator is on level ground. This ensures the oil level is properly measured by the generator's oil sensor.

Note: On some models, the dipstick should simply be inserted to check the oil level, on others, the dipstick must be fully screwed in and removed to check the level. Refer to the owner's manual for instructions for a specific generator model. See the I Can’t Find My Original Owner’s Manual for My Portable Generator, How Can I Get Another Copy? article for more information.

2. Unscrew the oil cap and fill the generator to the fill line.
3. Check the dipstick to make sure the oil level is at the FULL marker.

Oil quantity

Oil should be filled to the fill line. Oil quantity can be verified using the dipstick. Oil capacities vary by model. Capacities are listed in the specifications listed for each portable generator's owner's manual. Owner's manuals can be found using the product lookup tool on Generac.com: I Can’t Find My Original Owner’s Manual for My Portable Generator, How Can I Get Another Copy?

See the example image below, the oil capacity listed in the Generac XC series owner's manual. This image is offered as an example. Portable generator owners should always reference the manual for their specific generator to determine oil capacity.
