How do I clean my portable generator's carburetor?

Cleaning the carburetor is an important maintenance task that can be performed by the owner. Cleaning the carb can be a partial or complete solution for many "running rough", "starts and then powers off" issues. For more information, see the Portable generator troubleshooting guide

Properly maintaining the carb has the following benefits:

  • Helps prevent engine starting issues: Old fuel can gum up the carburetor, preventing the engine from starting.
  • Restores proper fuel flow: Clogged jets or passages restrict fuel delivery, leading to poor performance or stalling.
  • Improves fuel efficiency: A clean carburetor ensures optimal air-fuel mixture, helping the generator run more efficiently.
  • Helps extend engine life: Regular cleaning reduces carbon buildup and wear on internal components.
  • Helps avoid costly repairs: Keeping the carburetor clean helps avoid the need for replacement or costly service.

Environment

Non-EFI Portable generators: This article applies to most portable generators with carburetors. Specific instructions may vary by model. See your generator's manual for the most accurate process. If you are uncomfortable performing these steps, please contact an authorized service dealer. Note: The XD5000E and all EFI units do NOT use carburetors, they will feature electronic fuel injectors to regulate the ratio of air to fuel.

Cleaning a portable generator's carburetor

1. The unit should be OFF (not running) and cooled to the point that the engine is cool to the touch.
2. Locate the carburetor and the fuel petcock (shut-off valve).

  • The carburetor is typically located behind or under the air filter housing.
  • On the carburetor, the bolt(s) at the very bottom, is the bowl fastener. Just above that, on an angle, is the drain bolt:

3. Remove the bolt and drain fuel from the carb.

4. Remove the air filter and set the choke to the OPEN position.

5. Spray a carb cleaning solution directly into the intake. Generac support recommends using a carb cleaning solution to remove gun, varnish, and buildup. These cleaners are available in a pressurized can.

6. Other cleaners such as Sea Foam can be added directly to the fuel tank to dissolve harmful residues and carb jets, intake valves, pistons and combustion chambers.
