Corrosion protection procedure

Corrosion inspection is performed as part of a home standby generator's yearly maintenance. For more information, see the How do I perform the yearly maintenance for my home standby generator? article.

Environment

This article applies to Generac air-cooled Guardian Series 10-26 kW generators (2017 to present) during the regularly scheduled yearly maintenance interval and/or there are indicators of possible corrosion to the unit.

Procedure

Regular schedule maintenance should be conducted to inspect the unit for corrosion. Inspect all metal components of the generator, including the base frame, brackets, alternator can, the entire fuel system (inside and outside of the generator), and fastener locations. If there is corrosion found on generator components (e.g. regulator, engine/alternator mounts, fuel plenum, etc.). replace parts as necessary.

Periodically wash and wax enclosure using automotive-type products. Do not spray the unit with a hose or power washer. Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Frequent washing is recommended in saltwater/coastal areas. Spray engine linkages with a light oil such as WD-40.

Homeowners within 100 miles of the coast can be subjected to saltwater in the environment which over time can potentially cause corrosion.
