How the portable generator warranty and diagnosis process works
This article outlines how the portable generator warranty and diagnosis process works, including inspection, coverage determination, and diagnostic fees.
Environment
This article applies to portable generators.

Diagnosis process
Schedule an inspection
- If you suspect an issue may be covered under warranty, contact a Generac Independent Authorized Service Dealer (IASD) to confirm availability before bringing your generator to the service center.
- Owners are responsible for transportation and scheduling an inspection with a Generac IASD. Some dealers may offer pickup services for an additional fee.
- Generac Customer Support can help locate a Generac IASD and facilitate communication. However, Customer Support cannot schedule appointments on behalf of the owner.
Diagnosis and warranty determination
- Once at the service center, the IASD will inspect the generator and consult with Generac Technical Services to determine warranty eligibility.
- Warranty coverage is confirmed only if the issue meets all terms and conditions in the warranty statement.
- Maintenance records demonstrating adherence to the recommended schedule are required to maintain warranty validity. For more information on warranty requirements see the official warranty statement linked in this article.
Diagnostic fee
Why a diagnostic fee may be charged upfront?
Generac IASDs may charge a diagnostic fee upfront, even if your warranty is active. This fee reflects the time and labor required to inspect the generator.
- Time and resource commitment: A determination can only be made after the IASD has already committed resources to the diagnosis.
- Uncertainty of warranty coverage: Until the inspection is complete, it is unknown whether the issue qualifies under warranty.
When the Diagnostic Fee Is Covered
If the issue is found to be warrantable, the diagnostic fee will be covered, provided your warranty agreement’s labor component remains active. Coverage is still subject to exclusions and conditions in the warranty statement.
Key points
- Owner responsibility for scheduling: Owners are responsible for scheduling appointments and arranging transportation. Generac Customer Support can assist with locating a Generac IASD and facilitating communication but cannot schedule an appointment on behalf of the owner.
- Authorized service only: All warranty diagnosis and repairs must be performed by a Generac IASD.
- Joint warranty determination: Warranty eligibility is determined jointly by the authorized IASD and the Generac Warranty Team and must meet the warranty terms and conditions.
- Importance of maintenance Records: Maintaining detailed records in accordance with the product manual’s maintenance schedule is critical for warranty validation.
- Upfront Diagnostic Fee: This fee helps ensure that IASDs are compensated for their time and labor, as warranty coverage cannot be determined until the diagnosis is complete. Fees are at the discretion of the Generac IASD.
- Refer to the Warranty Statement: The Warranty’s specific terms, exclusions, and conditions govern all aspects of coverage. Always refer to this document guidance.
