Important information to verify:

  • The extender will need to be a 2.4 GHz network spectrum
  • The wireless protocol number will need to be 802.11 b, g, or n

Where can I confirm if the extender I chose is compatible?

  • Reference the extender's owner's manual
  • Spec or technical specifications listed online for the unit (this can be found by searching by brand and model number)

Example:

My extender shows the wireless protocol number is 802.11 ac, a, b,g,n all listed with it, and supports 2.4 GHz. Can this be used?

  • Yes, it can be used because it supports the appropriate protocols (b, g, n) and spectrum (2.4 GHz).
  • For IoT devices typically as long as it has one of the viable letters in it, it will work with the device you are wanting to connect.

Will an extender cause issues?

While extenders are generally reliable, adding an extender introduces a point of failure in the network connection, and therefore an additional item that must be checked when troubleshooting network issues. Some extenders have been known to enter a sleep mode when unused for a period of time.
