What is Cold Smart Start?

Cold Smart Start is a feature that helps a home standby generator start more reliably in cold temperatures by monitoring ambient temperature and adjusting its warm-up time. If the ambient temperature is below a fixed temperature upon startup in AUTO mode, the generator will warm up for 30 seconds, allowing the engine to warm before the load is applied. If the ambient temperature is at or above the fixed temperature, the generator will start up with a normal warm-up delay of five seconds. The Cold Smart Start feature is factory-enabled by default, but can be disabled if desired.

Environment

This article applies to Generac air-cooled home standby generators.
For Next Generation Series generators, see here.

For Guardian Series generators (2017-present), see here.

Next Generation Series

If the ambient temperature is below the 50° F (10° C) upon startup in AUTO mode, the generator will warm up for 30 seconds, allowing the engine to warm before the load is applied.

How do I disable Cold Smart Start?

For Next Generation Series generators, Cold Smart Start can be disabled/enabled in the Field Pro app.

Guardian Series

If the ambient temperature is below the fixed temperatures (based on generator size) upon startup in AUTO mode, the generator will warm up for 30 seconds, allowing the engine to warm before the load is applied.
