Service Entrance Disconnect
A Service Entrance Disconnect is an essential device that isolates the wiring in a home from the utility power service, and it is located immediately after the utility meter. It may be found in a separate exterior enclosure, the main panel of the home, or a whole home service entrance-rated transfer switch.
On vs. Off, Open vs. Closed
The "on" and "off" labels on an electrical panel's service disconnect refer to the position of the switch or breaker that controls the flow of electricity to your home or building.
- "On" or CLOSED: When the switch or breaker is in the "on" position, it means that electrical power is flowing from the utility lines into the home's wiring system. This allows electricity to be distributed to all the circuits and outlets in the home.
- "Off" or OPEN: When the switch or breaker is in the "off" position, it means that the flow of electricity has been interrupted. In this state, no power is being supplied to the home's circuits, which can be useful for performing maintenance, repairs, or in emergency situations.
It's important to note that when an owner needs to turn off the service disconnect, it should be done only for specific reasons, like working on the electrical system or in the case of an emergency. If an owner is unsure about how to use the service disconnect, or if they need to turn it off for any reason, it's recommended to consult a licensed electrician to ensure safety and compliance with local electrical codes.
