What is the Generac HVAC Energy Manager?

The Generac HVAC Energy Manager is an intelligent load management device designed to help your standby generator power your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system without overloading. It automatically monitors the generator’s capacity and prioritizes when and how HVAC loads are allowed to run during a power outage. By actively monitoring power supply and energy frequency, the HVAC Energy Manager can cycle air conditioners, heat pumps, or other high-demand equipment on and off as needed while operating on generator power. This ensures your generator can safely handle household loads without nuisance shutdowns. The result is improved comfort and efficiency while extending the life of your generator.

Environment

This article applies to Generac home standby generators and the Generac HVAC Energy Manager accessory. It is relevant for homeowners, installers, and service technicians who want to understand how HVAC load management integrates with generator operation.

If you are looking for information about the Generac load manager, see here: What is a Generac Load Manager (previously known as a Smart Management Module (SMM))?

How does it work?

  1. The Generac HVAC Energy Manager monitors energy frequency and the power source (whether utility or generator).
  2. If the device senses that the generator is supplying power to the home during an outage and detects a frequency deviation (potential overload condition), it will initiate a programmed load management and lockout sequence.
  3. If the load demand gets too high, the device will shed (or disable) loads. Depending on the frequency reading, the load may be locked out until utility power returns.
  4. This functionality protects the generator from overload, and allows energy intensive appliances to operate effectively during an outage.

Key Features

  • Smart load prioritization that prevents generator overload.
  • Supports single or multiple HVAC units for flexible system control.
  • Reduces the need to oversize your generator, lowering costs and improving fuel efficiency.

Benefits

  • Allows comfort systems to operate reliably during outages.
  • Protects the generator from excessive load conditions.
  • Provides peace of mind that HVAC will function safely without manual intervention.
