Generac Load Manager
Generac's Load Manager is a patented technology that helps manage large electrical loads during generator start-up and recovery periods by "shedding" the connected loads in case of an overload. The Load Manager is a 240V, 50A, or 100 A-rated coil that manages large electrical motor loads.
Generac Load Manager vs. Smart Management Module (SMM)
The Load Manager is part of Generac's second-generation Energy Management technology line, replacing the previous version of load management devices known as smart management modules (SMM). The Load Manager is functionally the same as the SMM, albeit with improved quality.
Load Managers vs Power Management Modules
Load managers and Power Management Modules (What is a Power Management Module (PMM)? ) are utilized to optimize backup power systems by strategically managing loads. This allows for a reduction in the minimum size of the generator for a more cost-effective installation.
Unlike the PMM's that depend on another control device, the Load Managers are self-aware, operate independently, and are wire-free making them easier and cheaper to install. The modules have an internal circuit board that monitors the frequency being produced by the generator. If the frequency drops below a certain threshold, it automatically turns the connected appliance off to prevent the generator from being overloaded. Systems can consist of up to 8 individual Load Managers.
Priority dial
A priority dial on the Load Managers allows users to set a load priority from 1 to 8 or can be set to “lock out only” mode for loads that do not need to run during a power outage. If the Lockout Switch is set to "Lockout Load on Generator", the connected appliance will not get power from the generator. This setting is used as a permanent lockout that customers can control.
Test button
The test button simulates an overload condition and will disable the Load Manager for a specified time, whether on generator or utility power. An LED provides the module’s status.

The Generac Load Manager is:
- Designed to be used as a lock-out device to eliminate high demand, non-essential loads during times of high energy usage
- Available in 50A or 100A options
- Capable of managing up to 8 loads, with the ability to add up to 4 more loads using SACM loads.
- Installed inline on the existing appliance wiring, which simplifies the installation process.
- Self-aware, with a built-in circuit board that monitors the frequency
- Requires no control wires to connect the module to the transfer switch
- Enclosed in a NEMA 3R enclosure that offers protection against weather and other outdoor elements.
Overall, the Generac Load Manager is an excellent addition to any generator installation, providing advanced load management capabilities that help ensure efficient and safe generator operation. Its ease of installation, wire-free design, self-awareness, and lock-out feature make it a highly recommended choice for managing large electrical loads in homes and businesses.
