How to test the Generac Load Manager functionality and operation

This article covers the procedures and scenarios for testing the load manager functionality and operation.
 

Environment 

This article applies to 50A and 100A Generac Load Managers. 

Note: Previous versions of the Load Manager were formerly known as Smart Management Modules (SMM).

How to perform a UTILITY test for Generac Load Manager 

1. Turn the utility power ON and enable all manager feeding circuits. 
2. Verify LED begins to flash at one-second intervals.
3. All contractors will close after five minutes. LED will illuminate and stay ON. 
4. Wait 30 seconds after the contactor closes, then press the TEST button and verify the manager load shed. The LED will flash at one-second intervals. 
5. Wait five minutes, plus a predefined priority set time for the module to recover. 
6. Contractor will CLOSE, and LED will illuminate and stay ON

 

How to perform a GENERATOR test for Generac Load Manager 

1. Simulate a utility loss by turning the service disconnect (utility disconnect) OFF while the generator is in AUTO. 
Generator test with Lockout Switch Enabled (perform if Lockout Switch Enabled on any loads)
2. All managers will lose power, and LEDs will be disabled. 
3. The generator will power on after the preset delay. 
4. All LEDs will flash when the generator transfers. 
5. Allow each load manager to enable output per its priority setting. 
6. After the predefined priority time elapses, each contractor will CLOSE, and the LED will illuminate and stay ON. 
7. Once the LED stays ON, press the TEST button and verify that the load shed occurs. 
8. Once load shed occurs, the LED will flash at one-second intervals. 
9. Allow time for each load manager to enable contactor output per priority setting. 
10 After a predefined priority set time, each contactor will CLOSE, and the LED will illuminate and stay ON. 

 

Note: Depending on load size, the Load Manager may immediately go into load shed mode or lockout during the test. In this event, one or more higher-priority loads should be removed to allow testing for each load manager. 

Generator test with Lockout Switch Enabled (perform if Lockout Switch Enabled on any loads)

1. Simulate a utility loss by turning MLCB (service disconnect) OFF while the generator is in AUTO.
2. All load managers will lose power, and LEDs will be disabled. 
3. The generator should power on after the preset delay. 
 

 

Note: LEDs will flash at six-second intervals for load managers with the lockout switch enabled, and the load will remain disabled while in generator power. 

Return to Utility Test 

Return utility power by setting the MLCB (service disconnect) to ON. 
 

Note: All load managers should begin flashing at one-second intervals. 
Note: All load managers will recover in five minutes (including units with lockout switch enabled.)
