Wrong Passcode Error

Activating the generator is a simple one-time process that only takes a few minutes. The activation process is necessary for the generator to run automatically. Some users have reported receiving a "wrong passcode" error during the activation process.

Environment

This article applies to Generac home standby generators.

Causes

This typically occurs when the wrong passcode is entered or the wrong serial number was provided.

Troubleshooting

If you receive an error of wrong passcode, please follow these steps.

1. Confirm you're using the correct serial number. The serial number is located inside the generator on the metal tag towards the floor of the generator on the firewall. See Where Do I Find the Serial Number on My Air or Liquid-Cooled Standby Generator? for more information.

2. Double-check the activation code is correct and that you are entering it correctly into the controller.

3. Verify the serial number recorded in the controller's firmware. To do this, perform a hard reset as shown in the How Do I Perform a Hard Reset on a Home Standby System? article. The serial number will display briefly after the installation wizard.

If the number on the controller is different than the generator serial number on the printed label, contact a customer experience technical representative at 1-888-436-3722 with the serial number that displayed on the controller.
