Wrong Passcode Error
Activating the generator is a simple one-time process that only takes a few minutes. The activation process is necessary for the generator to run automatically. Some users have reported receiving a "wrong passcode" error during the activation process.
Environment
This article is for users who see a WRONG PASSCODE message after inputting the activation code in the generator's control panel while attempting to activate their Generac home standby generator.
Note: If you see the WRONG PASSCODE message while trying to connect the generator to Wi-Fi, rather than during the activation, see Why Is My Generator Giving Me a “Wrong Password” Error Message When Connecting to the Wi-Fi Network? for more information.
Causes
This typically occurs when the wrong passcode is entered or the wrong serial number was provided.
Troubleshooting
If you receive an error of wrong passcode, please follow these steps.
1. Confirm you're provided the correct serial number to request the activation code. The serial number is located inside the generator on the metal tag towards the floor of the generator on the firewall. See Where Do I Find the Serial Number on My Air or Liquid-Cooled Standby Generator? for more information.
2. Double-check the activation code is correct and that you are entering it correctly into the controller.
3. Verify the serial number recorded in the control panel's firmware. To do this, perform a hard reset as shown in the How Do I Perform a Hard Reset on a Home Standby System? article. The serial number will display briefly after the installation wizard as the control panel reboots.
Note: If the serial number on the control panel is different than the generator serial number on the printed label, contact a customer experience technical representative at 1-888-436-3722 with the serial number that is displayed on the controller.
