Public Answer
An open transition switch will transfer power shortly after a utility power loss is detected. There will be a short delay while power is transitioned over to a generator. 

In a closed transfer switch system, there is an overlap between utility power and generator power, allowing for a seamless transition to backup power.

All of Generac's residential and commercial automatic transfer switches are open transition switches. Some industrial switches have closed transition options available.
