Can I see how much power my home standby generator is supplying while it is running?

Generac home standby (HSB) generators that use Mobile Link monitoring.

Is there a way to see the current electrical load, such as amps or kilowatts (kW), that my generator is supplying while it is running?

Answer

No. Today, there is no feature on the generator controller or in Mobile Link that displays the current real-time load for any Generac home standby (HSB) generator.

Mobile Link can provide status information, but it does not provide a live “power output” reading (amps or kW). For examples of the types of statuses Mobile Link can display, see: How to view generator status history in Mobile Link.

How to measure generator load

To measure how much power the generator is supplying while it is running, a qualified professional needs to measure current (amps) and calculate load.

Best practice

• Have an Independent Authorized Service Dealer (IASD) or a licensed electrician measure the electrical load using amp clamps and calculations.
• If ongoing monitoring is needed, a professional can install CT (current transformer) clamps as part of a monitored electrical setup.
• Use an IASD when possible so the generator system can be evaluated for correct sizing based on the home’s electrical demand.

What the professional may do on site

• Measure current (amps) on the appropriate conductors using amp clamps while the generator is running.
• Perform calculations to estimate total load based on what appliances, lights, and equipment are running.
• If requested, perform a home load audit that includes major appliances and typical usage patterns, then confirm whether the generator is properly sized for the home.
