Modifying circuit breakers on pre-wired switches

 

Generac populates these pre-wired panel boards with a predetermined number of branch circuits and circuit breakers with ampacity and voltage ranges between 15A 120V- 50A 240V. These branch circuits can also be reconfigured as needed in the field. As long as properly sized, listed, and labeled conductors are properly installed in accordance with Article 210 and Chapter 3 of the NEC and terminated on properly sized Siemens or Murray-listed circuit breakers, there will be no installation issues as long as the generator was properly sized to the requirements in 702.4(B)(2)(a).

In addition, it is mandatory in the NEC that certain branch circuits have AFCI or GFCI protection. If the branch circuit to be protected by the generator had AFCI or GFCI protection in the normal power panel board, then this protection is required to be provided in the transfer switch panel board. Generac does not supply AFCI or GFCI breakers in these transfer switches, and it is up to the installing contractor to provide these types of protection. Again, only listed Siemens or Murray AFCI/GFCI circuit breakers will be permitted.

NEC Article 90.7 allows the AHJ to inspect and accept any alteration to listed equipment provided that the modifications are performed to the applicable NEC code requirements and the modifications will not cause mechanical or electrical infrastructure damage to the transfer switch, generator, or both.
