Does a Portable Generator Need to Be Grounded?

This article explains when a Generac portable generator needs to be grounded and what affects grounding requirements. If you are only powering cord-and-plug equipment with extension cords, an earth ground rod is generally not required. Verify bonded vs. floating neutral in your owner’s manual. If you connect the generator to a building electrical system, electrical panel, or a manual transfer switch, the system must have only one neutral-to-ground bond to avoid a double bond hazard. Local code (AHJ) may require an earth ground rod. Always follow your owner’s manual and local requirements.
