Preparing a portable generator for storage

To help ensure reliable operation when back-up power is needed most, preparing a portable generator for storage is essential.

Note: This article provides general guidance for preparing a portable generator for storage. For storage instructions specific to your generator model, reference the owner's manual.

Environment

This article applies to Generac portable generators.

Procedure

1. Change the engine oil. See How Do I Change the Oil in My Portable Generator? for more information.
2. Remove the spark plug.
3. Pour 5–10 cc of clean engine oil into the cylinder, or spray a suitable fogging agent into the cylinder.
4. Pull the recoil starter several times to distribute oil in the cylinder.
5. Install the spark plug.
6. Pull the recoil starter slowly until resistance is felt, then gently release it. This closes the valves to help prevent moisture from entering the cylinder.

Storage location and cover

• When storing the generator between uses, keep it in a cool, dry location.
• Using a protective, moisture-resistant cover for storage is recommended. A tarp is acceptable, and portable generator covers are also available.

Note: Never place a storage cover on a hot generator. Allow the unit to cool to room temperature before covering and storing it.

Fuel storage

Fuel stored for over 30 days without a fuel stabilizer can deteriorate and damage fuel system components. Adequately prepared fuel can be stored for up to 24 months.

1. Fuel that will not be used, even for short periods, should be treated with fuel stabilizer to slow deterioration, gumming, and varnish formation.
2. Following the fuel stabilizer manufacturer’s recommendations, treat the fuel remaining in the fuel tank.
3. Open the fuel valve, start the engine, and operate for 30 minutes to circulate stabilizer throughout the fuel system.
4. Close the fuel valve and operate until the engine stops to circulate treated fuel through the fuel lines and carburetor.
5. Fuel can be drained into a suitable container or left in the tank.

Note: If fuel has not been treated with a fuel stabilizer, it must be drained into an approved container. Run the engine dry until it stops from lack of fuel. Using fuel stabilizers in fuel storage containers is recommended to help keep fuel fresh.
