How long can I operate a portable generator? Does It Need a “Break”?

Our generators (including portables) are designed to run continuously, if needed, during extended outage scenarios. However, heavy use and long run times do require regular maintenance and operation checks, as well as following safe procedures when powering down your generator and disconnecting it from electrical loads.

Continuous operation and Maintenance 

• Portable generators require an oil change after the initial break-in period, which varies depending on the engine. See your owner's manual for your generator's specific requirements.  

• After that, assuming you are running it continuously, we recommend checking the oil level and refilling it if necessary every time the unit runs out of fuel or every 8 hours, whichever comes first. 

• Additional maintenance intervals are outlined in your owner's manual.

 

How long can the generator run continuously?

• Runtimes for portable generators under full and half loads are available in your owner's manual under the specification section. This will very by unit, load, and fuel capacity. 

 

When does the generator need maintenance?

• Portable generators should be shut down and their oil levels checked every 8 hours of continuous operation. For more information, see the "Inspect Engine Oil Level" section of your owner's manual. 

• IF a scheduled maintenance interval is reached during continuous operation, the unit should be shut down to perform the required maintenance.

• Additionally, if you notice any signs of the unit running rough, stumbling, or making unusual noises, its important to shut it down immediately following the proper procedure before continuing operation. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more serious problems. 

 

Is there a proper way to shut down the generator during continuous operation?

• When the unit is close to empty after a long run, you need to power down and disconnect all electrical equipment connected to it, then turn the generator off. This would be an ideal time to check oil levels as well, and then refill with fuel if necessary.
