Checking for dirty or expired fuel

Check to see if your gas has any visible debris or appears dirty. It may be contaminated. If your gas has been sitting for longer than 30 days, it may be stale. Stale or old gas is a common cause of carburetor issues.

This article applies to portable generators that use fuel with a minimum rating of 87 octane and no more than 10% ethanol. See this article for more information about Generac portable generator fuel.

 

Methods to check fuel quality

• Fuel test strips can be used to check the quality of the fuel. Check your local auto parts store for availability. 
• When in doubt, it is best to use fresh gas.

 

If you determine that the gas in your generator is bad, drain all of the gas from the fuel system before adding fresh gas.
