How do I change my generator's exercise schedule from Mobile Link?

Mobile Link can be used to change a generator’s exercise schedule, depending on the Mobile Link subscription plan and the controller on the generator. This article explains which exercise features are supported by Basic and Premium plans, which controllers support each feature, and how to change the available settings.

Important: Exercise duration cannot be changed on most controllers. Only generators with a PowerZone 200 controller support changing the exercise duration, and this requires a Premium Mobile Link subscription.

Environment

This article applies to Generac home standby generators that have a Mobile Link connectivity device and are enrolled in a Mobile Link account. Feature availability depends on the generator controller and the Mobile Link subscription plan.

Before you begin

Exercise settings may include different options depending on the generator model and controller:

  • Exercise schedule changes the frequency, day, and time of the generator exercise.
  • Exercise duration changes how long the generator runs during exercise. This is only available for PowerZone 200 controllers with a Premium Mobile Link subscription.
  • Exercise now starts an on-demand exercise cycle where supported.
  • Exercise now and transfer power starts an exercise cycle and transfers the home to generator power. This is only available for compatible PowerZone 200 systems with a Premium Mobile Link subscription.

Feature availability by plan and controller

Basic Mobile Link plan

Premium Mobile Link plan

  • PowerZone 200 controller: You can remotely modify the exercise schedule, use supported Exercise Now features, use Exercise Now with power transfer where available, and change exercise duration. Bluetooth range is not required for remote schedule changes with a Premium subscription.
  • Evolution 2.0 controller: You can remotely modify the exercise schedule, including frequency, day, and time.
  • Evolution 1.0 / Nexus / Pre-Nexus controllers: Remote exercise schedule updates may be limited or may not report accurately due to controller communication limitations.

Note: If the plan and controller combination does not support a Mobile Link exercise feature, the exercise schedule can still be set directly from the generator controller. See How do I set the scheduled generator exercise date and time? for more information.

Modify the exercise schedule using the Mobile Link app

If the Mobile Link plan and generator controller support schedule changes, the exercise frequency, day, and time can be changed in the Mobile Link app.

  1. Launch the Mobile Link Mobile Link app icon app.
  2. Tap the Dashboard Dashboard icon icon to view connected devices.
  3. Tap the tile for the generator you want to configure.

  1. Swipe down and tap Exercise Settings.

  1. Make the desired changes to the frequency, day, and time.
  2. Tap Save.

Note: After changes are saved, the app may show a status such as “Scheduling Exercise Cycle” until the generator reports back and confirms the update. Generators with Evolution 2.0 control panels typically update and report exercise schedule settings reliably. Generators with Evolution 1.0, Nexus, and Pre-Nexus control panels may have limitations in how they communicate and may not set or report the schedule accurately.

Modify the exercise schedule using the Mobile Link website

If the Mobile Link plan and generator controller support remote scheduling, the exercise schedule can also be changed from the Mobile Link website.

  1. Log in to the Mobile Link website.
  2. Click the tile for the generator you want to configure.
  3. Click the Exercise Schedule tab.
  4. Click Update.
  5. Choose the desired schedule selections.
  6. Click Save.

Note: After changes are saved, the website may show an update-in-progress message until the generator reports back and confirms the change. Generators with Evolution 2.0 control panels typically update and report reliably. Generators with Evolution 1.0, Nexus, and Pre-Nexus control panels may have limitations and may not set or report the schedule accurately.

Modify the exercise schedule over Bluetooth

PowerZone 200 controllers can change the exercise schedule over Bluetooth from the Mobile Link app. This is the supported method for Basic Mobile Link users with a PowerZone 200 controller.

Note: Bluetooth changes require you to be within 10 feet of the generator. This option only applies to PowerZone 200 controllers while the mobile device is within Bluetooth range.

  1. Place the generator into service mode.
  2. Log in to the Mobile Link app.
  3. Tap the generator card.
  4. Under Settings, tap Exercise Settings.
  5. When prompted, tap I’m ready to connect.
  6. Allow Bluetooth access when prompted.
  7. In Exercise Settings, make the desired changes to the day of week, time of day, and/or frequency.
  8. Tap Save.
  9. Disconnect from Bluetooth.

Use Exercise now and transfer power

Exercise now and transfer power tests transfer switch operation and generator power output. A standard exercise typically runs the generator without transferring the home to generator power. Exercising with power transfer means the generator will exercise and perform a power transfer from utility power to generator power.

Availability: This feature is available to Premium subscribers with compatible Next Generation series generators that have a PowerZone 200 controller. For more detailed steps, see Using the Exercise Now and Exercise now and transfer power commands in Mobile Link.

Important: The home will briefly lose power as the system transfers from utility power to generator power and then back to utility power. Do not use this feature while the generator is already providing backup power to the home.

  1. From Exercise Settings, tap Exercise now next to Exercise now and transfer power.
  2. Read the warnings and confirm before tapping Yes, exercise now. To cancel, tap No, cancel.
  3. Wait while the command is sent to the generator. It may take up to 15 minutes before the exercise with transfer begins.

Change exercise duration

Availability: Generators with a PowerZone 200 controller can change exercise duration using the Mobile Link app with a Premium subscription. For more information, see Can I change the exercise cycle duration?

  1. From Exercise Settings, use the Exercise duration slider to adjust the exercise time.
  2. Tap Save.
