This article applies to all home standby generators with liquid propane (LP) and natural gas fuel systems. Particularly in regions where extreme winter weather is rare. 
 

LP systems (propane)

Propane is stored as a liquid under pressure in tanks. For it to be used as fuel, it must vaporize and expand. In colder temperatures, the pressure inside the tank decreases, which can prevent propane from vaporizing effectively. This reduction in pressure can be problematic, particularly in extreme cold, as it may be insufficient to power larger equipment reliably. 

 

Precautions to take

 

• Clear snow and ice from propane tanks, regulators, vents, piping, and valves to allow sunlight to reach and warm the system. 

• Remove snow and ice from appliance vents, flues, and chimneys to ensure proper gas venting. 

• Reduce the thermostat setting in homes to reduce demand on the propane system, which allows pressure in the tank to build. 

• NEVER use open flames or electrical devices near propane tanks, and never attempt to heat a propane tank to solve pressure issues artificially. 

 

Natural gas systems

Natural gas generally handles low temperatures well. However, issues arise when water in the gas stream freezes. Gas companies employ various methods to prevent freezing, such as removing moisture from the gas. Nonetheless, in regions that rarely experience severe winter conditions, the infrastructure may not be adequately designed to handle such extremes. This lack of preparation can affect gas production and system efficiency.
