How to Determine If an Extender is Compatible with Mobile Link Wi-Fi

Mobile Link requires a stable internet connection to deliver accurate information and allow users to remotely monitor their generators. Since generators are installed outside and sit some distance from the router, maintaining a strong, stable connection can be challenging.

Adding a Wi-Fi extender can help boost the signal and improve connectivity. It can also be a great option to improve network compatibility if the router does not support 2.4 GHz with a dedicated SSID. Please see the connectivity requirements below for guidance on selecting a compatible Wi-Fi extender.

Note: While we can provide general guidance on device compatibility, Generac customer support cannot recommend individual Wi-Fi extender models. If your router is owned by your ISP, we recommend contacting them to determine which extender is recommended for your network equipment. 

Environment

Note: The Wi-Fi/Ethernet Device has been discontinued. Meeting the network requirements outlined in this article will resolve most connectivity issues. However, upgrading to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory is recommended for users who wish to add connectivity to their generator or users experiencing ongoing connectivity issues. It is compatible with more generators, and uses multiple carrier networks to offer greater coverage. Basic (free) and Premium cellular plans are available for users of this device. Connectivity requirements

Before purchasing a subscription, homeowners should ensure that their generator has a reliable cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Refunds are not available for issues caused by poor connectivity. Wi-Fi requirements:

• A dedicated 2.4 GHz network that supports 802.11b/g/n protocols is required for Mobile Link. 
• 5 GHz or dual-band networks are not supported.
• Setting up a separate SSID for your 2.4 GHz network is strongly recommended to maintain a stable connection.

Where can I confirm if the extender I chose is compatible?

Check the extender’s owner’s manual or the technical specifications listed online. You can usually find this information by searching for the brand and model number.

Example:

My extender lists the wireless protocols 802.11 a/ b/ g/ n/ ac, supports 2.4 GHz, and allows for a dedicated SSID. Can I use it? 

• Yes — this extender should work because it supports the required protocols (b, g, n), uses the correct frequency band (2.4 GHz), and allows you to set up a dedicated SSID.

Will an extender cause issues?

Wi-Fi extenders are generally reliable, but they can add another potential point of failure in your network connection. If you run into connection problems, remember to check the extender as part of your troubleshooting. Also, be aware that some extenders may enter a sleep mode if they’re not in use for an extended period.
