Optimize your generator’s Wi-Fi connection with a dedicated 2.4 GHz network

Mobile Link Wi-Fi devices operate exclusively on the 2.4 GHz frequency band and are optimized for performance when connected to a dedicated 2.4 GHz network SSID. Many modern dual-band routers can broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz using separate network names (SSIDs) or a single shared network name (SSID). When both bands share one SSID, some networks manage connections more aggressively across bands and access points, which can result in weaker signal strength, repeated disconnects, and difficulty reconnecting for 2.4 GHz-only devices. To help improve signal strength and keep the connection stable, set up a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID that is separate from the 5 GHz SSID, and connect the generator to the 2.4 GHz SSID. Features like band steering, Smart Connect, or similar settings often contribute to weak signal readings, repeated disconnections, and reconnect issues for 2.4 GHz-only devices. Disable these features if your router supports it 

Dual-band means a router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Mesh refers to a multi-node Wi-Fi system for better coverage, and many mesh systems are also dual-band. Mobile Link compatibility depends on providing a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID and meeting the network requirements in this article.

This article applies to Generac home standby generators with the Onboard Wi-Fi Device or Wi-Fi/Ethernet Device. It does not apply to generators using the Connectivity Cellular Accessory (including the optional Wi-Fi backup). Note: Meeting the network requirements outlined in this article will resolve most connectivity issues. However, upgrading to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory is recommended for users who wish to add connectivity to their generator or users experiencing ongoing connectivity issues. Why a dedicated 2.4 GHz network matters 

• Better Range and Signal Penetration: 2.4 GHz signals travel farther and are more effective at penetrating walls and other obstacles compared to 5 GHz.

• Avoid single-SSID conflicts: When 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share one network name (SSID), some routers will try to optimize connections across bands and access points. For 2.4 GHz-only devices, this can show up as weaker signal strength and repeated disconnects. A dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID removes this variable and helps keep the generator consistently connected to the correct band.

• Improved Stability: A dedicated SSID eliminates uncertainty and helps ensure your generator stays consistently connected to the proper band.

Identifying networks with a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID

• On your smartphone, tablet, or computer: Go to your Wi-Fi settings and view the list of available networks. If you see two similar network names (e.g., HomeNetwork_2G and HomeNetwork_5G), your network is already split, and you can connect the generator to the 2.4 GHz SSID.

Troubleshooting connectivity issues 

If you experience difficulties connecting your generator or maintaining a stable connection, it may be due to how your home Wi-Fi is configured, especially if 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share one network name (SSID). This configuration can contribute to weaker signal strength, repeated disconnections, or difficulty reconnecting after a router, internet, or power interruption.

Ensure your router:

• Supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with one of the following wireless protocols: 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n.
• Has a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz should not share the same network name).
• If the router has band steering, Smart Connect, or similar features, disable them (if possible).

How to split a Wi-Fi network

To improve connectivity, split your Wi-Fi network so the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands each have their own unique network names (SSIDs). This helps improve signal strength and stability by allowing you to connect your generator to the 2.4 GHz network, which is the only frequency Mobile Link supports.
Most modern dual-band routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. Some routers are configured to combine both bands under a single network name (SSID). To split them:

• Log into your router's settings through a web browser or app. 
• Disable features like "smart connect" or "band steering" (if present).
• Assign separate names (SSIDs) to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks

How can I tell if my Wi-Fi network or the generator’s Wi-Fi hardware is the issue?

To see whether your Wi-Fi network or the generator is causing the connection issue, try connecting the generator to a smartphone hotspot. Successful hotspot connection usually points to a router configuration issue.

Frequently asked questions

• Is my router compatible with Mobile Link (including dual-band and mesh systems)? Is Mobile Link compatible with Wi-Fi 6? 
  • Users should verify above that the router meets the network requirements (frequency, wireless protocol, and SSID configuration). Dual-band and mesh systems can work as long as the generator can connect to a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID. If your router uses a single SSID for both bands, split the SSIDs or create a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID, then connect the generator to the 2.4 GHz network.
• Why do I see captive portal and "no internet" prompts after connecting my device to the generator's MLG network?
  • Because the MLG network is a temporary setup network, your device may warn No internet, show Sign in to network / Action required, or open a captive portal page. If you dismiss or close the prompt, or do fail to choose Keep Trying Wi-Fi (or Use Without Internet), your phone may disconnect from the generator’s temporary MLG network. • What if my router or internet service provider are unable to split my network?
  • Consider one of the following options:
    
    • Adding a dedicated 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi extender that meets the network requirements outlined above.
