Identifying an industrial product

1. Check the serial number

Review the serial number printed on the product data tag.

• A serial number beginning with 2 identifies an industrial product
• A serial number beginning with another digit does not rule out an industrial product

Industrial serial-number formats have changed over time. Use the model number, power rating, and product type when the serial number does not provide a clear answer.

2. Check the model number or prefix

The following model numbers and prefixes indicate industrial products:

QTA or QT___A	Custom-built generator without an enclosure, intended for indoor use
SD	Single-unit diesel generator
SB	Bi-fuel generator
SG	Single-unit gaseous generator that runs on natural gas or LP
MD	Modular or paralleling diesel generator

MB	Bi-fuel modular power system
99A, 98A, 97A, 96A, and similar prefixes	Legacy industrial model numbers in which the first two numbers indicate the year manufactured

3. Check the kW rating

A generator rated above 150 kW is industrial. However, Generac industrial generators can have much lower ratings. The industrial stationary generator catalog includes diesel models beginning at 10 kW.

Note: The power-rating rule works in one direction. A rating above 150 kW confirms an industrial generator, but a rating of 150 kW or less does not confirm that the generator is residential or commercial.
