Portable generator maintenance schedule
Routine maintenance is essential for maintaining optimal performance and helping ensure that the generator operates as efficiently as possible.
Environment
These article describes intervals that can only be tracked if your portable generator has an hour meter. If your model does not have an hour meter, then consult your generator's owner's manual to follow required seasonal maintenance intervals.
Maintenance intervals
Note: The list below is provided as a general reference. For model-specific maintenance procedures and schedules, refer to the owner's manual which contains comprehensive information to help keep your portable generator in top condition. Portable generator manuals can be found by searching the model number or serial number.
- Before each use: Check the engine oil level.
- At the 20-30 hour mark (break in period): When a portable generator has reached 20-30 hours (model dependent) of run time, break-in maintenance should be performed. For most portable generators, this typically involves an oil change and valve clearance adjustment. For larger models, an oil filter change may also be required. Consult the owner's manual for model-specific requirements for break in maintenance: Where can I download a user manual for my Generac portable generator?
- For every 100 hours or every year: Change the engine oil, and inspect/clean the spark arrestor. Recommend oil depends on the operating environment: What Type of Oil Is Recommended for Use With Generac Portable Generators?
- For every 200 hours or every year: Clean or replace the air filters.
- For every 300 hours or every year: Check valve clearance.
- Every year: Replace the spark plug.
Note: If operating under heavy load or in high temperatures, the oil and oil filter (if applicable) should be changed every month.
If operating in dirty or dusty conditions, the air filter should be inspected (and replaced if necessary) more frequently.
What if my portable generator is running for a long time during an extended outage?
- Portable generators that are being put to use for longer periods of time during an extended power outage will reach service intervals faster.
- Keep track of run hours and make sure that the maintenance tasks specified in your portable generator owner's manual are being performed on time and when needed.
- Additionally, it is recommended that portable generators are safely shut down every 8 hours (or when they run out of fuel) so that the generator can cool down and required maintenance can be performed: How long can I operate a portable generator? Does It Need a “Break”?
- When the generator is close to empty after a long run, users need to power down the generator by disconnecting all electrical equipment connected to it first, then turn the generator off.
