Optimize your generator’s Wi-Fi connection with a dedicated 2.4 GHz network

Mobile Link Wi-Fi devices operate exclusively on the 2.4 GHz frequency band and are optimized for performance when connected to a dedicated 2.4 GHz network SSID. Many modern routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals under a single network name (SSID), which can lead to connection instability for devices that require 2.4 GHz, like your Generac generator. To ensure the most reliable connection, we strongly recommend setting up a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID that is separate from the 5 GHz SSID. This allows the generator to connect directly to the correct frequency without interference or confusion caused by band steering or automatic frequency switching.

Environment

This article applies to Generac home standby generators with the Onboard Wi-Fi Device or Wi-Fi/Ethernet Device. For up-to-date information about currently available Mobile Link Connectivity Devices and compatibility, see: Mobile Link Wi-Fi, Cellular, and LTE device compatibility guide.

Note: Meeting the network requirements outlined in this article will resolve most connectivity issues. However, upgrading to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory is recommended for users who wish to add connectivity to their generator or users experiencing ongoing connectivity issues. It is compatible with more generators, and uses multiple carrier networks to offer greater coverage. Basic (free) and Premium cellular plans are available this device. See here to upgrade: Connectivity Cellular Accessory.

Why a dedicated 2.4 GHz network matters

  • Better Range and Signal Penetration: 2.4 GHz signals travel farther and are more effective at penetrating walls and other obstacles compared to 5 GHz.

  • Avoid Band Steering Conflicts: Some routers automatically switch devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (a feature known as band steering), which may cause Mobile Link to disconnect or fail to connect entirely.

  • Improved Stability: A dedicated SSID eliminates uncertainty and ensures your generator stays consistently connected to the proper band.

Identifying networks with a dedicated 2.4 GHZ

  • On your smartphone, tablet, or computer: Go to your Wi-Fi settings and view the list of available networks. If you see two similar network names (e.g., HomeNetwork_2G and HomeNetwork_5G), your network is already split, and you can connect the generator to the 2.4 GHz SSID

Troubleshooting connectivity issues

If you experience difficulties connecting your generator or maintaining a stable connection, it may be due to how your home network handles dual-band Wi-Fi.
Ensure your router:

  • Supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with one of the following wireless protocols: 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n.
  • Has a separate SSID for the 2.4 GHz network.
  • Is not actively enforcing band steering.

For detailed connection troubleshooting, see: How do I troubleshoot Mobile Link Wi-Fi connection errors?.

Network requirements summary

RequirementDetails
Frequency2.4 GHz only (5 GHz is not supported)
Wireless protocols802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n (Wi-Fi B, G, or N)
Network securityWPA/WPA2 security recommended
SSID configurationSeparate SSID for 2.4 GHz network is strongly recommended

Note: Check your Wi-Fi router's label or owner's manual to verify it supports one of the compatible Wireless Protocols (802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n). Contact you internet service provider for additional assistance.

How to split a Wi-Fi network

To improve connectivity, we recommend splitting your Wi-Fi network so the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands each have their own unique network names (SSIDs). This allows you to manually connect your generator to the 2.4 GHz network, which is the only frequency Mobile Link supports.
Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. By default, these are often combined under a single network name. To split them:

  • Log into your router's settings through a web browser or app.
  • Disable features like "smart connect" or "band steering".
  • Assign separate names (SSIDs) to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks

Note: For additional assistance splitting your Wi-Fi network, contact the manufacturer of your Wi-Fi router OR your internet service provider.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my dual-band or mesh router compatible with Mobile Link? Is Mobile Link compatible with Wi-Fi 6?
    • Users should verify above that the router meets the network requirements (frequency, wireless protocol, and SSID configuration). For best performance, ensure that the generator is connected to a separate SSID for 2.4 GHz only.
  • What if my router or internet service provider are unable to split my network?
    • Consider adding a dedicated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi extender that meets the network requirements outlined above.

Note: For more information on Wi-Fi extenders, see here.
