Recommended Wi-Fi signal strength and connection stability for Mobile Link devices

Environment

This article applies to generators and accessories that use a Wi-Fi connection, including onboard Wi-Fi, Mobile Link Wi-Fi/Ethernet accessories, and the Connectivity Cellular Accessory when configured to use Wi-Fi as a backup connection.

To determine which device is installed on your generator, see Which Generator Controllers Are Compatible with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or 4G LTE?.

Signal strength information

Signal strength can vary due to distance, building materials, interference from other devices, and router configuration. Because signal reliability can’t be guaranteed in every home, Generac support recommends a minimum signal strength range as a baseline.

As a final step in the connection process, the generator will display its current signal strength. As a baseline, Generac recommends a Wi-Fi signal strength of at least 30% to 40% to help avoid connection issues.

Note: Signal strength below 30% does not always mean there will be communication issues. However, if you have connection stability issues and the signal strength is below 30%, consider installing a Wi-Fi extender to increase signal strength to at least 30%.

How to check signal strength before installation

Before installing or finalizing the generator’s Wi-Fi setup, you can estimate signal strength with a smartphone:

  1. Stand near the location where the generator will be installed.
  2. Open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and select the homeowner’s network.
  3. Review the signal level indicator and compare it to the examples below.

If the signal strength does not meet the recommended range, installing a Wi-Fi extender is recommended.

Experiencing ongoing connectivity issues?

Upgrading to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory is recommended for users who want to add connectivity to their generator or who are experiencing ongoing connectivity issues. It is compatible with more generators and uses multiple carrier networks to offer greater coverage. Basic (free) and Premium cellular plans are available for users of this device. See here to upgrade: Connectivity Cellular Accessory.
