Configure Wi-Fi backup for the Cellular Connectivity Device

Environment

This feature is available in Mobile Link app version 3.14 and newer for generators using the Connectivity Cellular Accessory device. See Which generator controllers are compatible with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or 4G LTE? to view an image of the device.

Wi-Fi is a backup to cellular connectivity and will switch only if no cellular network is available. End users cannot manually choose Wi-Fi when a cellular signal is available.

Before you begin

Note: The Connectivity Cellular Accessory device must be linked and added to the generator in the Mobile Link account before Wi-Fi backup can be configured. For a new enrollment, add the device to the account before continuing. When switching from another connectivity device to the Connectivity Cellular Accessory device, contact Mobile Link Support to swap the device first.

Wi-Fi backup configuration requires the mobile device to temporarily communicate directly with the generator. Stay close to the generator during the process and avoid moving away after entering Wi-Fi Configuration.

If the app cannot detect the generator locally, an error may appear indicating that the generator cannot be found. This can occur during Wi-Fi configuration when proximity or device-readiness requirements are not met.

Set up Wi-Fi backup in the Mobile Link app

Generator owners can configure Wi-Fi backup using the Mobile Link app.

1. Log in to the Mobile Link app.
2. Tap the generator card.
3. Under Settings, tap Wi-Fi Configuration.
4. When the “Disconnect from Bluetooth?” prompt appears, tap No, stay connected.
5. Tap the Wi-Fi network to connect to.
6. If the network does not appear, tap Refresh list of available networks.
7. Enter the Wi-Fi network password.
8. Re-enter the Wi-Fi network password to confirm it. Tap the Show icon to verify the password if needed.
9. Tap Save.
10. Wait while the “Saving Wi-Fi information. This should only take a minute.” message is displayed.
11. When the configuration is successful, the app returns to the Wi-Fi Configuration screen and displays the configured Wi-Fi network.

Set up Wi-Fi backup in the Field Pro app

Installers can configure Wi-Fi backup using the Field Pro app.

1. Log in with the Field Pro credentials.
2. Tap Work on a Home Standby Generator.
3. Select the customer’s generator serial number.
4. Press the Service Mode button on the generator control panel.
5. In the app, tap Continue on the Service Mode screen.
6. Under Modify the default settings, tap Wi-Fi Configuration.
7. When prompted that the device is not connected to a network, tap Configure Wi-Fi connection.
8. Tap the customer’s network name from the available networks list.
9. Enter the customer’s Wi-Fi password and re-enter it to confirm. Tap the Show icon in each field to verify the password, then tap Save.
10. Wait while the “Saving Wi-Fi information. This should only take a minute.” message is displayed.
11. When the configuration is successful, the default settings page shows that Wi-Fi has been configured.

Remove Wi-Fi backup configuration

A user may choose to remove the configured Wi-Fi network when Wi-Fi backup is no longer wanted, including when removing the backup connection may help mitigate the risk of missing Mobile Link notifications.

Note: Before removing the Wi-Fi configuration, remain within 10 feet of the generator and make sure the mobile device is connected to the generator using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Maintain the Bluetooth connection until the Wi-Fi configuration has been removed.
1. Log in to the Mobile Link app.
2. Remain within 10 feet of the generator and confirm that the mobile device is connected to the generator using Bluetooth.
3. Tap the generator card.
4. Under Settings, tap Wi-Fi Configuration.
5. If the “Disconnect from Bluetooth?” prompt appears, tap No, stay connected.
6. Tap Remove Wi-Fi Configuration.
Note: Removing the Wi-Fi configuration removes the configured Wi-Fi backup connection. Cellular connectivity remains the primary connection for the Connectivity Cellular Accessory device.

Having issues?

  • Remain within close range of the generator during Wi-Fi setup or removal
  • Confirm the Mobile Link app is updated. Open the app store on the mobile device and install any available updates before trying again
  • Verify that the Connectivity Cellular Accessory device is linked to the Mobile Link account and added to the correct generator. If the device is not linked, the Wi-Fi Configuration option may not be available
  • When removing Wi-Fi backup, verify that the mobile device remains within 10 feet of the generator and maintains its Bluetooth connection
