Installing the breather warmer (or breather heater)

The breather warmer (or breather heater) is only recommended for use in extreme cold weather applications where heavy icing occurs (0 °F or 18°C and below). Breather heaters are compatible with air cooled generators manufactured from 2008-present.

Environment

Preparing for installation: 

IMPORTANT: Disconnect power mains and render equipment inoperable before attempting repairs or maintenance.

Proceed as follows before performing any maintenance to prevent the generator set from accidental startup:

1. Unlock and lift lid. Press the OFF button on control panel. If the generator had been running, allow unit to cool completely for 5 minutes.

2. Set generator main line circuit breaker (MLCB or generator disconnect) to OFF (OPEN) position.

3. Remove the 7.5A DC fuse from control panel.

4. Turn off utility (mains) power supply to transfer switch.

• In service rated transfer switches, turn main breaker OFF.
• In non-service rated switches, turn power feeder breaker OFF.

5. With generator set shut down, remove controller fascia (2013-2015 units) or intake side panel (2016 and newer units) and front panel: How do I remove the front panel on my home standby generator?

 

Installing the breather warmer (heater)

Note: Series refers to the engine displacement, measured in cubic centimeters (cc). The generator's engine size is specified in the spec sheet: Where can I find a user manual or other documentation for my home standby generator?

 

Guardian Series generators

1. With generator and main utility service shut down, remove the generator front panel and side panel:

2. Then, remove the customer connection panel covers and shown in Figure 1 and 2 below:

10kW (400 series engines)

1. See Figure 3. Wrap breather heater (A) around breather hose, evenly spaced as shown, with lead wires at the bottom. Wrap breather heater and hose with silicone tape (provided) to secure heater.

2. See Figure 4. Route lead wires beneath and behind engine as shown.

3. Pass lead wires through harness grommet (B) in engine divider panel.

4. Secure all wires with plastic wire ties at least 0.5 in (1 cm) away from fuel hoses.

5. Proceed to Connecting lead wires.

14kW and 18kW (800 series engines)

1. See Figure 5. Wrap breather heater (C) around breather hose, evenly spaced as shown, with lead wires at the top. Wrap breather heater and hose with silicone tape (provided) to secure heater.

2. Route lead wires between intake elbow (D) and mixer (E), as shown.

3. Pass lead wires through harness grommet (F) in engine divider panel.

4. Secure all wires with plastic wire ties at least 0.5 in (1 cm) away from fuel hoses.

5. Proceed to Connecting lead wires.

20kW-26kW (500/1000 series engines)

1. See Figure 6. Remove airbox cover (G), intake elbow (H), and air filter (J).

2. See Figure 7. Remove three mounting screws behind engine divider panel to disconnect snorkel (K).

3. See Figure 8. Remove screws from airbox base (L).

 

4. See Figure 9. Remove screws attaching mixer to intake manifold (access screws behind divider panel). Set airbox base and mixer (M) aside, with wires still connected to mixer, to expose breather hose (N).

5. See Figure 10. For units with the 1000 series engines (2016-present), the lower mixer screw is accessible through a hole (P) in the engine divider panel. Remove plastic cover from the hole and set aside for reassembly.

6. See Figure 11. Wrap breather heater (R) around breather hose, evenly spaced as shown, with lead wires at the bottom. Wrap breather heater and hose with silicone tape (provided) to secure heater.

7. Pass lead wires through harness grommet (S) in engine divider panel.

8. Secure all wires with plastic wire ties at least 0.5 in (1 cm) away from fuel hoses.

9. Install mixer with air box base and snorkel.

10. Install intake elbow, air filter, and airbox cover.

11. Proceed to Connecting lead wires.

 

Connecting lead wires

Next Generation Series generators (2025 - present)

IMPORTANT: Disconnect power mains and render equipment inoperable before attempting repairs or maintenance.

Connect heater lead wires to T1 terminal (B) and neutral stud (C) as shown in Figure 18 below.

Note: Wire with ring terminal connects to neutral bar stud.

Guardian Series Generators (2013-2025)

2016-2025 Guardian Series

1. See Figure 12. Pass lead wires through the customer connection panel grommet (A).

2. See Figure 13. Connect heater lead wires to T1 terminal (B) and neutral stud (C) as shown.

Note: Wire with ring terminal connects to neutral bar stud.

2013-2015 Guardian Series

Completing installation

IMPORTANT: Verify proper type and quantity of oil prior to starting engine. When installing any cold weather item, it is required that the generator's oil be replaced with either Generac's proprietary 5W-20 full synthetic oil, or 5W-30 full synthetic oil: How Do I Change the Oil and Oil Filter in a Generac Air-Cooled Home Standby Generator?

1. Verify all wire routings are clear of pinch points and other damage. Use tie wraps where necessary.

2. Install customer connection panel cover.

3. Install controller fascia (2013-2015 units) or intake side panel (2016 and newer units) and front panel.

4. Return utility power supply to transfer switch:

• In service rated transfer switches, turn main breaker ON.
• In non-service rates switches, turn power feeder breaker ON.

5. Install 7.5A fuse in control panel.

6. For Guardian series generators, complete the install wizard programming. Otherwise, complete configuration process through the Field Pro application.

7. Press AUTO on the control panel.

8. Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON (CLOSED).

9. Close and lock lid.
