What should I do if I have a weak Wi-Fi signal strength?

Users experiencing weak or unreliable Wi-Fi connectivity between the generator and the home network can take several steps to improve signal strength and establish a more stable connection with the Mobile Link device. This article outlines troubleshooting steps and compatible extender options to help resolve connectivity issues.

This article applies to Generac with the Onboard Wi-Fi module (air-cooled generators only) or the Wi-Fi/Ethernet Device.

Troubleshooting weak Wi-Fi signal strength

If a generator is experiencing weak signal strength on your device, there are several things that can be attempted to improve it:

 1. Verify 2.4GHz Network with Dedicated SSID: Generac Mobile Link Wi-Fi devices work best when connected to a 2.4GHz network that has its own dedicated SSID (network name).

2. Move the Wi-Fi router closer to the generator: If possible, move your router to a location that is closer to the generator. The closer the router is to the generator, the stronger the signal will be.

3. Check for interference: Other electronic devices or appliances, such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, or even other Wi-Fi routers, can interfere with the signal. Try moving these devices away from the router or your device.

4. Check for obstructions: Walls, furniture, and other objects can block the signal. Try moving your router to a different location or removing any obstructions.

5. Reset the router: Sometimes simply resetting the router can improve signal strength.

6. Upgrade the router: If a router is old or outdated, upgrading to a newer model may improve signal strength.

7. Use a Wi-Fi range extender: A range extender can help to boost signal strength by extending the range of the Wi-Fi network.

8. Contact the service provider: If all other attempts have failed, contact the internet service provider to see if there are any other solutions or upgrades that they can provide.

 

Range Extenders

To work with a Mobile Link device, your Wi-Fi router, extender, or repeater must support communication on the 2.4 GHz frequency with a dedicated SSID. It must also support one or more of the following wireless protocols: 802.11b, g, or n. While the device can be compatible with additional standards, support for b, g, or n is required for proper operation.
